Man Utd transfer news RECAP - Osimhen update, Simons plan, Cunha link (2025)

Hello and welcome to our latest Manchester United blog. The Manchester Evening News will have you covered at every step with news, views and transfer rumours from Old Trafford and beyond.

Despite what has been a challenging season for United so far - as underlined by their Premier League position and latest defeat to Wolves on Sunday afternoon - they could yet end up with some silverware.

Ruben Amorim's men are through to the Europa League semi-finals. Athletic Bilbao await at that stage - and that's very much their focus from this point onwards.

Off the pitch, there are countless rumours doing the rounds. Viktor Gyokeres, Victor Osimhen and Ipswich Town's Liam Delap all continue to be mooted as signings in the making as United target a new striker, while Southampton winger Tyler Dibling has also spoken - directly - about transfer links to the Old Trafford giants.

Hannibal Mejbri buy-back truth

Congratulations are in order for former Manchester United talent Hannibal Mejbri, who has secured promotion to the Premier League in his first season with Burnley.

Scott Parker's side will be in celebration mode this Easter Monday having just beaten Sheffield United 2-1 at Turf Moor. With that result, the Clarets in second with 94 points cannot be caught by the Blades in third, who are on 86 points, as both clubs now have just two matches to go.

The Manchester Evening News understands mechanisms in place for United to resign Hannibal from Burnley, should they wish to.

Last summer when he was sold for a fixed £5.4m fee, potentially rising to £9.4m, MEN Sport reported United were able to insert a buy-back clause into the deal.

Sancho to Chelsea transfer update

An obligation clause for Jadon Sancho to join Chelsea on a permanent basis in the summer transfer window has now become active, according to reports.

Sancho joined Chelsea from manchester United on a season-loan back in the summer. The loan includes an obligation to buy for a £25 million fee in the summer transfer window

The winger has failed to really make a mark at Stamford Bridge this season, failing to establish himself as a regular in Enzo Maresca’s starting lineup. In his 35 appearances for the club, he has scored three goals, including the equaliser in last weekend’s 2-2 draw against Ipswich.

Casemiro transfer update

Manchester United have been handed a transfer update on midfielder Casemiro.

The Brazilian is contracted to United until 2026 with the option of an additional year, but has struggled for much of the past 18 months and has been linked with a move away from Old Trafford. A move to Saudi Arabia has been heavily mooted in the past, but clubs in the Saudi Pro League passed on a potential move for him last year

Casemiro's performances have improved in recent weeks, but at 33, the former Real Madrid star is approaching the end of his career. United would require a fee of £15million to sell him in the summer and avoid a loss under the Premier League's profitability and sustainability rules, having bought him for £60m from Real in 2022.

Opinion: United shouldn't regret Tottenham transfer failure

Mathys Tel was an in-demand striker in January. The Bayern Munich forward was being chased by two Premier League clubs desperate for a goalscorer to reignite their stuttering campaign.

In the end, Manchester United's refusal to pay Bayern Munich £5million to help develop the 19-year-old swung the balance of power towards Tottenham, who also had an option to make the move permanent for £45million.

That final part of the deal is moot now. Spurs won't stump up £45million for a player who has underperformed and Tel is likely to return to Bayern ahead of a potential permanent exit in the summer. That Old Trafford won't be a possible destination underlines why there was no great desire to overpay in January to use him for six months.

Latest injury news

Manchester United were beaten 1-0 by Wolves at Old Trafford as Pablo Sarabia's late free-kick secured the three points for his side on Sunday.

After the drama of the Europa League win over Lyon, the clash with Wolves was always set up to be a more low-key affair. Ruben Amorim made five changes for Sunday's Premier League outing, with Europe now his primary focus as United look to salvage something from an awful campaign.

Following the clash with Wolves, here is all the very latest on the United injury front.

United to target new striker and goalkeeper

Manchester United intend to sign a goalkeeper and striker in what is shaping up to be a drastic summer transfer window at the club.

Ruben Amorim decided less than two months into his tenure that United would need a new goalkeeper to compete with Andre Onana and a centre forward is an urgent priority.

United have scored a meagre 38 goals in 33 Premier League games and have a -8 goal difference which has left them 14th in the table.

Opinion: United's £25m transfer mistake

What a week it has been for Scott McTominay, scorer of three crucial goals for Napoli to reignite Europe's closest title race and further cement his status as a modern-day hero in a city that makes deities out of its footballers. McTominay's mural doesn't yet stand next to Diego Maradona's in Naples, but if he continues to drive the club towards another Serie A triumph, the worship will go up a notch.

The Scot scored twice in the 3-0 win against Empoli on Monday and then scored the only goal of the game on Sunday as Napoli won away at Monza, drawing level with Inter at the top of the table with six games to go. McTominay has the same number of non-penalty goals in Serie A this season as Napoli striker Romelu Lukaku.

The man quickly nicknamed 'Braveheart' and given a hero's reception on his arrival in the city last summer has become a fans' favourite and a favourite of coach Antonio Conte and his teammates. This was the praise afforded to him on Sunday from Napoli captain Giovanni Di Lorenzo.

Maguire sends classy message

Harry Maguire has sent a classy message on social media to Manchester United debutant Tyler Fredricson.

The Reds defender impressed in central defence alongside Victor Lindelof and Noussair Mazraoui but could do little to stop United suffering a 1-0 defeat at home to Wolves on Sunday. Pablo Sarabia's second-half goal from a free-kick was enough to condemn Ruben Amorim's side to a 15th Premier League loss of the season.

But, Fredricson represented a rare bright spot for Amorim's men against Vitor Pereira's side. The 20-year-old was drafted in with several stars rested after Thursday's monumental victory over Lyon in the Europa League quarterfinals.

Opinion: What Hojlund did may seal his fate

Rasmus Hojlund continues to look out of place at Manchester United as Ruben Amorim is faced with his biggest problem at Old Trafford.

The Reds desperately need a new striker this summer, with Hojlund's stats continuing to cause alarm at M16. United's Danish forward has netted just eight goals across all competitions this season.

In total, Hojlund has scored just 24 times in 84 appearances since completing a £72million move to United from Atalanta in August 2023. The Denmark international is not totally to blame with a severe lack of creativity in Amorim's team restricting Hojlund's goalscoring opportunities.

Cunha's bizarre move gives Man United transfer clue

Manchester United's biggest weakness was confirmed again during Sunday's dismal 1-0 defeat at home to Wolves.

Ruben Amorim's labouring side have limped through the entire campaign with an abysmal record in front of goal. The Reds have played almost as many games in the Premier League this season (33) as they have goals scored (38).

Strikers Rasmus Hojlund and Joshua Zirkzee, meanwhile, have netted just 15 goals between them across all competitions. With Zirkzee ruled out for the remainder of United's season, only Hojlund can now add to this tally. Judging by the Danish forward's performance against Wolves, Amorim will have to rely on goals from other areas of his team.

Shock return eyed

Manchester United are reportedly monitoring former winger Anthony Elanga ahead of a potential summer move, according to CaughtOffside.

The Sweden international has caught the eye for Nottingham Forest since making the move from the City Ground. Chelsea, Arsenal and Tottenham are all said to be interested too.

It is added that an offer of around €50 million (£42.8m) could convince Forest to cash in.

United handed defender boost

Bayer Leverkusen defender Jonathan Tah has confirmed that he will be leaving the club as a free agent in the summer.

United are one of the teams who have been linked with the defender in recent months.

He's now told Kicker: "Everything was said from the start. There was a point in time when I made the decision not to extend my contract and not to stay here. It remains that way now."

Harry Maguire sent brilliant message

Saint-Etienne fans sent a brilliant message to United defender Harry Maguire ahead of their Ligue 1 derby with Lyon.

The game came just a few days after Maguire scored a late extre-time winner for United against Lyon in their Europa League quarter-final victory.

And Saint-Etienne fans held a banner displaying the message "Merci Maguire" ahead of Sunday's game.

The Match, which had to be delayed tdue to a fan thowing an object on the pitch, eventually ended in a 2-1 win for Saint-Etienne.

Jadon Sancho update

Chelsea's obligation to buy Jadon Sancho from United at the end of his loan deal has now been triggered, according to journalist Ben Jacobs.

The £25 million obligation is said to be triggered in the summer if Chelsea finish above 15th, which their win against Fulham on Sunday now gurantees.

Chelsea can however get out of the obligation by paying a £5 million penalty fee to United.

United 'keen' on Simons

Manchester United are one of the teams keen on signing RB Leipzig's Xavi Simmons.

The attacking midfielder is under contract with the German club until 2027 but has put his future in doubt with his latest comments.

Sky Germany report that United, along with Liverpool are showing an interest, with Leipzig looking for an €80 million (£68.6m) fee if they are to sell.

Roy Keane reveals Van Nistelrooy hope

Roy Keane has said he hopes former United teammate Ruud Van Nistelrooy will get the chance to help Leicester City return to the Premier League next season.

The former United striker's relegation in charge of the Foxes was officially confirmed yesterday after a 1-0 defeat against Liverpool.

There has been talk over Van Nistelrooy's future at the club, with talks reportedly set to take place this week.

"Ruud is a pretty honest guy and he is obviously disappointed but his message there was that he wants to get them back up again next season," Keane told Sky Sports after the game.

"He obviously wants to have backing from the board and get on with the recruitment, the pre-season and start looking at plans ahead. His message there is that he is wanting reassurance from the club owner and maybe there needs to be some sort of statement in the next few weeks where they say that they are backing Ruud to get the club back up next year because it can happen.

"There is obviously frustration, the lack of goals at home, there are definitely problems at board level, Ruud mentioned recruitment in January that didn’t quite happen. So there is stuff to fix and let’s hope Ruud is the man to do it.

"It has been a tough few months for him but I think he has handled himself well but fingers crossed he will get that opportunity."

Another Sporting link

Manchester United are among the clubs to be linked with an interest in Sporting's defensive midfielder Morten Hjulmand, according to CaughtOffside.

The report says that United along with Arsenal and Tottenham are in the race to sign the Danish international in the summer transfer window.

The player is reported to have a release clause of €80 million (£68.6m), but Sporting are said to value him at around €50-60 million (£42.9m-£51.4m).

Tyler Dibling is among several names to have been linked with a move to Old Trafford, while speculation around his future will only ramp up now that Southampton have been relegated.

Here's what the youngster said on what may - or may not - happen this summer;

I don't try to think about it all and just try and go into train every day and work hard and train the best I can. At the end of the day, I love Southampton. I have been here since I was eight. It is such a great team and I am working to do big things with them.
