Yuuno, a young archaeologist from a magical world, has had an accident with his ship and scattered the 21 “Jewel Seeds” all over the earth. To protect people from the powerful artefacts, he immediately tries to collect the out-of-control stones. In a fight against one of the Jewel Seed monsters, however, Yuuno is badly injured and retreats into the animal form of a ferret to recover his strength and heal his wounds.
Unsuspecting, ordinary third-grader Nanoha Takamachi helps the poor ferret and, in return, receives from him magical powers and the wand Raising Heart, which appears purely by willpower whenever she needs it. From that day on, she does her best to collect the Jewel Seeds from another world with her animal companion and protect the people. However, her family and friends are not allowed to know about her struggles as a Magical Girl, and besides, she is not the only one who is after the stones …

Der aus einer magischen Welt stammende junge Archäologe Yuuno hat mit seinem Schiff einen Unfall erlitten und dabei die 21 »Jewel Seeds« überall auf der Erde verstreut. Um die Menschen vor den mächtigen Artefakten zu schützen, versucht er die außer Kontrolle geratenen Steine sogleich wieder einzusammeln. Im Kampf gegen eines der Jewel Seed Monster wird Yuuno aber so schwer verletzt, dass er sich zur Erholung seiner Kräfte und um seine Wunden zu heilen, in die tierische Form eines Frettchen zurückzieht.
Nichtsahnend hilft die gewöhnliche Drittklässlerin Nanoha Takamachi dem armen Frettchen und erhält von ihm zum Dank magische Kräfte und den Zauberstab Raising Heart geschenkt, der rein mittels Willenskraft erscheint, wann immer sie ihn braucht. Von diesem Tag an gibt sie ihr Bestes, um zusammen mit ihrem tierischen Begleiter die aus einer anderen Welt stammenden Jewel Seeds einzusammeln und die Menschen zu beschützen. Ihre Familie und Freunde dürfen von ihren Kämpfen als Magical Girls jedoch nichts mitbekommen, und sie ist außerdem nicht die einzige, die hinter den Steinen her ist …
